Villa Serbelloni, Bellagio, Italy - Travel Journal - Wednesday, September 24, 1997

An entry in the TFS Travel Journal

Breakfast, then off to our 10am facials, which were enjoyable, though too cold at times. It was another beautiful day, so we strolled up and down the little town of Bellagio, which was filled with mostly touristy stuff, but some interesting glass, silk scarves, ceramics and antiques. Nothing motivated us to part with any Lire, though.

Had a nice walk to La Pergola restaurant in the Pescallo area, just over a small hill and down to the other side of the lake. The food was very good, the view was excellent, the service sucked. The mixed antipasto was actually four different cold meats, and the vegetable of the day appetizer was a nice mix of interestingly prepared warm vegetable dishes, the tagliatelle w/bolognese sauce was good, and the fish specialty (perch) was fried, so we couldn’t really tell how it tasted, but it was served with some really tasty rice. A nice Nebbiolo (red) accompanied the meal. Dessert was a tiramasu that was out of this world, or out of our world, anyway. (thanks for the recommendation, W & J!)

As we ambled back toward the car, we debated whether to attempt the drive to Lugano (approx. 45 minutes and a ferry ride) or to relax by the lakeside. We (of course) opted for the drive, but by divine intervention the ferry was closed to cars for the remainder of the day! We drove back to the hotel, immensely grateful that we hadn’t gone out earlier and tried to return to Bellagio via ferry this afternoon; wouldn’t like to have to drive the circumference of the lake on these roads! We just relaxed on chaises and read while enjoying one of the more memorable views in the world on our last day here.

Met cousin Marilyn for a drink at 7, then when she had to go dine w/her group at 8, we ingratiated ourselves into the conversation at the neighboring table with two recently-graduated Harvard girls and an older, boring couple. We shared stories — he’s a Psycologist from Long Island, she does something in Florida in Real Estate, and the two girls are living in Paris for the year after graduating and are on a little trip (student budget style - that sure brought back some memories!) before attempting to find work.

Headed back up in time for Milton to squeeze in an hour workout before the Palestra closed at 10, happy to have brought one of our beloved music-workout tapes from home! Munched on some lovely fresh fruit (really enjoying this one-real-meal-per-day routine) and packed for tomorrow’s departure to Chianti.
